Capital Improvement Plan

Focus on Student Safety and Growth Within CCS

The Board of Education has worked to develop a comprehensive plan to address student safety and growth within the Cullman City School System. This aligns to indicator 3.1 of our current strategic plan- Address current student growth needs and develop a plan to address future expanding needs.

A result of this comprehensive plan would be to adjust the grade configuration of our school system to PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. This would be a three to four year process beginning with addressing the Middle and Primary Schools.

    • Add a 12 classroom wing (tornado shelter), multipurpose building, and cafeteria/kitchen
    • Develop a second exit from campus to Oak Street
    • Convert old cafeteria to additional classroom space
    • Transition all 2nd grade students in August of 2023

    Completion Date: October, 2023

    • Add a 16-18 classroom building (tornado shelter) to include a new library, agriscience area, performing arts area, and administrative offices
    • Remove round building and old agriculture building
    • Incorporate interior upgrades to main building and cafeteria
    • Transition all sixth grade students to CMS in August of 2025

    Anticipated completion: end of the 2024-2025 school year

    • Invest up to $4,000,000.00 based on facility needs for future growth
    • Transition 2nd grade to CCPS in August of 2023
    • Transition 6th grade to CMS in August of 2025
    • Install synthetic turf at CHS softball field (completed in April 2022)
    • Replace bleachers in CHS gym (completed in December of 2022)
    • Partner with Quarterback Club to upgrade stadium scoreboard (completed in July of 2022)
    • Address deteriorating tennis complex restrooms (completed in summer of 2022)
    • Maintenance Department Workspace/Shop (completed in April of 2024)

Phase II of Capital Growth Plan

  • Location: Campus of West Elementary

    1. New Two Story Wing (facing HWY 278)
      • Up to 18 typical and specialty classrooms
      • Administrative Space
    2. New Multipurpose Building which will also serve as a Storm Shelter (facing HWY 278)
      • Daily PE Classes
      • Stage
      • Bleachers on one side
      • Storage 
      • Coaches Office
    3. Grades 3-5
      • Up to 14 classrooms per grade level
      • Self-contained special education classrooms
      • Resource special education classrooms
      • English language learners and speech room
      • Music room
      • Art room
      • Gifted room and lab space
    4. Existing Classrooms
      • Upgrade restrooms and sewage lines (where applicable)
      • Upgrade classroom doors
      • Upgrade various millwork
    5. Existing Gym
      • Convert to STEM lab (Space for robotics, maker space, 3D printing, drones, collaboration, etc...
    6. Library
      • Extend space on the back of the library (north)
    7. Cafeteria
      • Remove the stage in the current cafeteria & expand dining space
    8. Smith Center (Old Library)
      • Convert to hands-on functional classrooms
    9. Enclosed Concourse from the front to the back of the campus to increase security
    10. Parking
      • Accommodate at least 100 employees
      • Plus spaces for visitors & required ADA

    Estimated timeline: Open 2027-2028 School Year

    1. Renovations & modification to East Elementary
    2. Serve up to 300 preschool children (currently serve 130)

    Estimated Timeline: After the completion of CIS

    1. New Multi-level wing adjacent to Agriscience shop north of old pool area
      • 11 Classrooms
      • 6 Programs (Cybersecurity, Engineering, Computer Science, Health Science, Marketing, & Educators in Training)
      • 2 Labs- STEM & Health Science
      • 3,900 sq. ft. state of the art modern manufacturing classroom and lab
      • Frees up classroom space in existing buildings
      • Parking

    Estimated Timeline: Open 2026-2027 School Year
