The first Nicholas Fillinger Memorial 5K Run is being held on Saturday, May 17th on the campus of St. Bernard Prep School. This event has been established to remember Nicholas and support the First Baptist Church of Cullman Chapel Choir Consumed 2014 Mystery Tour, about which Nicholas was passionate.
A special feature of this 5K run will be a team competition.
Teams that compete in this race will be scored in the same manner as cross country racing.
So, why a team competition? Nicholas loved to run, obviously, but he loved cross country above any other running or endurance sports because of this team element. It brings in accountability, camaraderie, and family just like many other team sports do, but it is very unique in the world of endurance sports.
To compete as a team you have to have at least 5 runners but you can have more. As many as 7 will be scored and the number 6 and 7 runner can become valuable in the situation of a tie.
The way the scoring works is based on the runners finishing place in the race and just like golf the lowest score wins.
Tom finishes in 1st place then that is 1 point for his team.
Bob finishes in 5th place then that is 5 points for his team.
Johnny finishes in 23rd place then that is 23 points for his team.
Stan finishes in 34th place then that is 34 points for his team.
Dan finishes in 40 the place then that is 40 points for his team.
This teams total score would be 103 points.
You can also enter as an individual.
Awards will be given to overall male and female winners as well as to overall masters male and female winners. Awards will also be given to the top 3 finishers in each of the following categories:
Under 12, 13-17, 18-22, 23-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and over.
Awards will follow the race at approximately 9:15 am.
